How to Buy a Laptop Online in Kenya Safely (Avoid Scams)
4 min read
Why this matters
Laptops are a common target for online scams in Kenya precisely because they are high-value and often bought sight-unseen. A few minutes of checking before you pay can save you from losing a significant amount of money.
Checklist before you pay anyone
Does the seller have a real, working physical address you can visit, not just a phone number and a social media page?
Can you pay on delivery, or at minimum, inspect the device before the seller receives final payment? Any seller who insists on 100% payment upfront with no verification option deserves extra scrutiny.
Does the listing clearly state condition (new/refurbished/used), warranty terms, and exact specs — or are these vague ("good condition", "as new") with no detail?
Does the seller have an established website with real product pages, business registration details, and consistent contact information — rather than only a WhatsApp number or a single social media post?
Search the seller’s name plus "scam" or "complaint" before paying anything significant — it takes thirty seconds and surfaces most known bad actors.
Red flags to walk away from
Prices dramatically below every other listing for the same exact model and spec — if it looks too good to be true in the refurbished laptop market, it usually is.
Pressure to pay immediately "before someone else buys it", especially combined with refusal to let you inspect or verify the item first.
Payment requested only via personal M-Pesa number with no business till/paybill, invoice, or receipt offered.
